Breast Self-Examination: How to Check Your Breasts at Home

Dear ladies, knowing your breasts well is one of the simplest yet most powerful steps you can take for your health. Regular breast self-examination helps you understand what's normal for you, making it easier to notice any changes early. At Aara Gynecare, we believe every woman should feel confident performing this simple check at home.

Why Breast Self-Examination Matters

Most breast changes are not cancer, but early detection of any abnormality can make a significant difference. By examining your breasts monthly, you become familiar with their normal texture, size, and feel, allowing you to spot anything unusual quickly.

When to Perform the Examination

The best time is 3-5 days after your period ends, when your breasts are least likely to be tender or swollen. If you no longer menstruate, choose a fixed date each month that's easy to remember.

How to Examine Your Breasts

Step 1: Visual Inspection
Stand shirtless before a mirror with your arms at your sides. Look for changes in size, shape, or symmetry. Check for dimpling, puckering, or skin changes. Raise your arms overhead and look again, then press your hands on your hips to flex chest muscles.

Step 2: Physical Examination While Standing
Using the pads of your three middle fingers, examine each breast using circular motions. Cover the entire breast area from your collarbone to your abdomen, and from your armpit to your cleavage. Use light, medium, and firm pressure to feel different tissue depths. Many women find this easier while showering, as wet skin allows fingers to glide smoothly.

Step 3: Examination While Lying Down
Lie down with a pillow under your right shoulder and your right arm behind your head. Using your left hand, examine your right breast with the same circular pattern. Repeat on the other side. Finally, gently squeeze each nipple to check for any discharge.

What to Look For

Notice any lumps, thickening, hardness, swelling, dimpling, skin irritation, nipple changes, or unusual discharge. Remember, many breast changes are normal, but any persistent change deserves attention.

When to Seek Help
