Laparoscopy: What to Expect Before, During and After
If your doctor has recommended laparoscopy, you might feel anxious about what lies ahead. At Aara Gynecare, we believe that understanding the procedure can help ease your concerns. Let us walk you through what to expect before, during, and after your laparoscopic surgery.
Before Your Laparoscopy
Your doctor will discuss why you need the procedure—whether it's to diagnose conditions like endometriosis, remove ovarian cysts, treat fibroids, or address fertility issues. You'll need some basic blood tests and possibly an ultrasound beforehand. Remember to fast for 8-10 hours before surgery, which means no food or water. Wear comfortable, loose clothing and arrange for someone to accompany you home. Don't hesitate to ask all your questions during your pre-operative consultation—no concern is too small.
During the Procedure
Laparoscopy is performed under general anesthesia, so you'll be comfortably asleep throughout. The surgeon makes tiny incisions (usually 0.5-1 cm) near your navel and lower abdomen. A laparoscope—a thin tube with a camera—is inserted to view your pelvic organs on a screen. Depending on what's needed, the surgeon may remove cysts, treat endometriosis, or perform other necessary procedures using specialized instruments. The entire surgery typically takes 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on complexity. Because the incisions are so small, laparoscopy is often called "keyhole surgery."
After Your Surgery
You'll wake up in the recovery room and may feel groggy from anesthesia. Some women experience shoulder pain from the gas used during surgery—this is normal and usually resolves within a day or two. Mild abdominal discomfort and bloating are common. Most patients can go home the same day or after an overnight stay. You'll receive pain medication and instructions for wound care. Rest for a few days, but gentle walking actually helps recovery. Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for 2-3 weeks. Most women return to normal activities within a week.
Why Choose Laparoscopy?
Compared to traditional surgery, laparoscopy offers smaller scars, less pain, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery. It's an excellent option for diagnosing and treating many gynecological conditions with minimal disruption to your daily life.
