Preeclampsia: Warning Signs Every Pregnant Woman Should Know
Pregnancy is a beautiful journey, but it's important to stay alert to certain health conditions that can affect you and your baby. One such condition is preeclampsia – a serious pregnancy complication that every expecting mother should understand. At Aara Gynecare, we believe that awareness and early detection can make all the difference.
What is Preeclampsia?
Preeclampsia is a pregnancy condition characterized by high blood pressure and signs of damage to other organs, usually the kidneys. It typically occurs after 20 weeks of pregnancy and can develop suddenly, even in women with normal blood pressure previously.
Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore
High Blood Pressure: Regular monitoring during prenatal visits is crucial. If your blood pressure reading is consistently 140/90 mmHg or higher, it needs immediate attention.
Severe Headaches: Persistent headaches that don't go away with rest or medication could be a warning sign. These are different from typical pregnancy headaches.
Vision Changes: Blurred vision, seeing spots or flashing lights, temporary vision loss, or light sensitivity should never be dismissed.
Upper Abdominal Pain: Severe pain in the upper right side of your abdomen, often under the ribs, can indicate liver involvement.
Sudden Swelling: While some swelling is normal during pregnancy, sudden and excessive swelling of face, hands, or feet – especially if accompanied by other symptoms – warrants immediate medical attention.
Decreased Urine Output: Producing less urine than usual or noticing protein in your urine during routine tests.
Shortness of Breath: Difficulty breathing or chest pain should be evaluated immediately.
Who is at Higher Risk?
Certain factors increase your risk: first pregnancy, history of preeclampsia, pregnancy with twins or multiples, age over 35, obesity, diabetes, kidney disease, or chronic high blood pressure. Women with PMOS may also have increased risk factors.
Why Early Detection Matters
When detected early, preeclampsia can be managed effectively with regular monitoring and appropriate care. Left untreated, it can lead to serious complications for both mother and baby. This is why attending all your prenatal appointments is absolutely essential.
