Signs of Labour: How to Know When the Baby is Coming
As your due date approaches, you may feel both excited and anxious about when labour will begin. Understanding the signs of labour can help you feel more prepared and confident. Dr. Rukmini Sowmya at Aara Gynecare is here to guide you through what to expect as your baby prepares to arrive.
Early Signs That Labour May Be Near
In the days or weeks before active labour begins, you may notice some changes. Your baby may "drop" lower into your pelvis, making breathing easier but increasing pressure on your bladder. You might experience a burst of energy called "nesting instinct," feel like cleaning and organizing everything. Some women also notice their joints feel looser, and they may have mild cramping or backache.
True Labour Signs to Watch For
When true labour begins, you'll notice regular contractions that become stronger, longer, and closer together over time. These contractions don't go away when you change position or rest. You may see a "bloody show" – a small amount of thick, pinkish discharge as your cervix begins to open. If your water breaks, you'll feel a gush or steady trickle of fluid. Not all women experience this before reaching the hospital, but if you do, note the time and colour of the fluid.
When to Call Your Doctor
Contact your doctor immediately if your water breaks, especially if the fluid is green or brown in colour. Call if you have regular contractions every 5 minutes for an hour, or if you notice decreased baby movements. Any vaginal bleeding (more than light spotting), severe abdominal pain, or severe headache with vision changes also requires urgent medical attention.
False Labour vs. Real Labour
Many first-time mothers worry about false alarms. Braxton Hicks contractions (practice contractions) are irregular, don't increase in intensity, and often stop with rest or hydration. True labour contractions follow a regular pattern, gradually get stronger, and continue regardless of your activity level.
Stay Calm and Prepared
Remember, every woman's labour experience is unique. Keep your hospital bag ready, have your doctor's contact numbers easily accessible, and arrange transportation in advance. Trust your instincts – if something feels wrong, it's always better to get checked.
