Breast Self-Examination: How to Check Your Breasts at Home

Dear women, taking care of your breast health is just as important as any other aspect of your well-being. Regular breast self-examination is a simple yet powerful way to know your body better and detect any changes early. At Aara Gynecare, we encourage every woman to make this a monthly habit.

Why Should You Examine Your Breasts?

Early detection saves lives. When you examine your breasts regularly, you become familiar with how they normally look and feel. This makes it easier to notice any unusual changes like lumps, dimpling, or discharge that might need medical attention.

When to Do the Examination

The best time is 3-5 days after your period ends, when your breasts are least tender or swollen. If you don't menstruate, choose a fixed date each month that's easy to remember.

Step-by-Step Guide to Self-Examination

Step 1: Look in the Mirror
Stand in front of a mirror with your arms at your sides. Look for any changes in size, shape, or skin texture. Check for dimpling, puckering, or redness. Raise your arms above your head and look again.

Step 2: Lying Down Examination
Lie down on your back with a pillow under your right shoulder. Use your left hand's finger pads (not fingertips) to examine your right breast. Move in small circular motions, covering the entire breast from collarbone to abdomen, and from armpit to cleavage. Apply light, medium, and firm pressure at each spot. Repeat on the left breast.

Step 3: Check While Bathing
Some women find it easier to examine their breasts when the skin is wet and soapy. Use the same circular motion technique in the shower.

Step 4: Check Your Nipples
Gently squeeze each nipple to check for any discharge.

What to Look For

Watch for lumps, thickening, swelling, dimpling, skin irritation, nipple changes, redness, or unusual discharge. Remember, many breast changes are normal, but it's always better to get them checked.

When to Seek Help

If you notice anything unusual, don't panic, but don't delay either. Most breast changes are benign, but professional evaluation brings peace of mind.
