Endometriosis Surgery: What to Expect Before and After

If you've been diagnosed with endometriosis and your doctor has recommended surgery, it's natural to feel anxious. Understanding what happens before and after the procedure can help ease your worries and prepare you for a smooth recovery.

What is Endometriosis Surgery?

Endometriosis surgery, usually performed through laparoscopy (keyhole surgery), removes endometrial tissue that has grown outside your uterus. This tissue can cause severe pain, heavy periods, and fertility problems. Surgery helps relieve symptoms and improve your quality of life.

Before Your Surgery

Your doctor will conduct a thorough examination and may order ultrasound or MRI scans to understand the extent of endometriosis. You'll be advised to stop certain medications and fast for 8-12 hours before surgery. It's important to arrange for someone to accompany you home after the procedure.

Wear comfortable clothing and avoid wearing jewelry or makeup. Most importantly, discuss any concerns or questions with your surgeon beforehand. Understanding the procedure will help you feel more confident and relaxed.

During the Procedure

Laparoscopic surgery is performed under general anesthesia, so you won't feel any pain. Small incisions are made in your abdomen, and a camera along with surgical instruments are inserted to remove the endometrial tissue. The surgery typically takes 1-3 hours depending on severity.

After Your Surgery

You may experience some discomfort, bloating, or shoulder pain (from the gas used during surgery) for a few days. These symptoms are normal and will gradually subside. You'll likely be discharged the same day or after an overnight stay.

Rest is crucial for the first week. Avoid heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, and sexual activity for 4-6 weeks or as advised by your doctor. You can resume light activities within a few days, but listen to your body.

Recovery Tips

Take prescribed pain medications as directed. Eat a balanced diet with plenty of fluids to prevent constipation. Gentle walking helps improve circulation and speeds recovery. Attend all follow-up appointments to monitor your healing progress.

Most women experience significant pain relief and improved fertility after endometriosis surgery. With proper care and guidance, you can return to your normal life within 2-4 weeks.
