Laparoscopy: What to Expect Before, During and After
If your gynecologist has recommended laparoscopy, you might feel anxious about what lies ahead. At Aara Gynecare, we understand your concerns. Let us walk you through this minimally invasive procedure so you know exactly what to expect.
What is Laparoscopy?
Laparoscopy is a modern surgical technique where small incisions (usually 0.5-1 cm) are made in your abdomen. A thin tube with a camera helps the doctor see inside and perform necessary procedures. It's commonly used for diagnosing conditions like endometriosis, ovarian cysts, fibroids, and infertility issues, as well as treating them.
Before the Procedure
Your doctor will ask you to fast for 8-12 hours before surgery. Inform Dr. Rukmini Sowmya about any medications you're taking or health conditions you have. You'll receive instructions about which medicines to stop temporarily. Arrange for someone to accompany you home, as you won't be able to drive after anesthesia. Wear comfortable, loose clothing and avoid jewelry or makeup on the day of surgery.
During the Procedure
You'll be given general anesthesia, so you'll be comfortably asleep throughout. The procedure typically takes 30-90 minutes depending on complexity. Dr. Sowmya will make small incisions, insert the laparoscope and specialized instruments, and perform the necessary examination or treatment. Carbon dioxide gas is used to inflate your abdomen for better visibility. Most patients don't feel anything during the procedure.
After the Procedure
You'll wake up in the recovery room and may feel groggy for a few hours. Some shoulder pain or bloating from the gas is normal and usually resolves within 24-48 hours. Most patients go home the same day or after one night's stay. You might experience mild pain at incision sites, but this is manageable with prescribed medications.
Recovery at Home
Rest for 2-3 days and avoid heavy lifting for two weeks. You can usually return to normal activities within a week. The tiny incisions heal quickly with minimal scarring. Follow your doctor's instructions regarding wound care, diet, and follow-up appointments.
Laparoscopy offers numerous benefits over traditional surgery: smaller scars, less pain, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery.
