Second Trimester: Your Baby and Your Body - What to Expect
Welcome to Your Second Trimester
Congratulations on reaching the second trimester! Often called the 'golden period' of pregnancy, weeks 13 to 27 bring relief from early pregnancy discomforts and a beautiful connection with your growing baby. At Aara Gynecare, we're here to guide you through every step of this wonderful journey.
Your Baby's Amazing Growth
During these precious months, your baby is developing rapidly. By week 16, your little one can hear your voice and respond to sounds. Tiny fingers and toes are fully formed, and soon you'll feel those magical first movements called 'quickening' - like gentle butterflies in your belly. By the end of this trimester, your baby will be about 35-40 cm long and can even open their eyes!
Changes in Your Body
You'll likely notice your energy returning during this trimester. The morning sickness that troubled you earlier usually fades away. Your belly becomes visibly rounded as your baby grows, and you might start showing that beautiful pregnancy glow everyone talks about. Some women experience darkening of the skin around the nipples and a line down the belly - these are completely normal hormonal changes.
Common Second Trimester Experiences
Many expecting mothers feel back pain as the baby grows heavier. Wearing comfortable footwear and practicing gentle exercises can help. You might also notice swelling in feet and ankles, especially in Vizag's warm climate. Stay hydrated and rest with your feet elevated when possible. Some women experience bleeding gums or nose bleeds due to increased blood flow - don't worry, but do mention it during your check-up.
Important Care Tips
Continue taking your prenatal vitamins and eating a balanced diet rich in proteins, calcium, and iron. Include plenty of fruits, vegetables, dal, milk, and green leafy vegetables. Stay active with walks or pregnancy-appropriate yoga. This is also the time for your important anomaly scan, typically done between 18-22 weeks, which checks your baby's development in detail.
When to Reach Out
Contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, severe headaches, or reduced baby movements after week 20.
