Fibroids: Symptoms, Risks and Treatment Options

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus. They are surprisingly common, affecting many women during their reproductive years. If you've been diagnosed with fibroids or suspect you might have them, understanding your condition is the first step toward finding the right treatment.

What Are Fibroids?

Uterine fibroids, also called myomas or leiomyomas, are muscular tumors that grow in the wall of the uterus. While the word "tumor" might sound frightening, remember that fibroids are almost always benign (not cancerous). They can vary greatly in size—from as small as a seed to as large as a melon—and you may have one or multiple fibroids at the same time.

Common Symptoms of Fibroids

Many women with fibroids experience no symptoms at all. However, when symptoms do occur, they may include:

Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding that may lead to anemia, pelvic pain or pressure, frequent urination, difficulty emptying the bladder, constipation, backache or leg pains, and pain during intercourse. Some women also experience an enlarged abdomen, making them appear pregnant.

Who Is at Risk?

While the exact cause of fibroids remains unclear, certain factors increase your risk. These include age (most common between 30-40 years), family history of fibroids, obesity, early onset of menstruation, and hormonal factors. It's important to note that fibroids can affect any woman, regardless of whether she has had children.

Treatment Options Available

The good news is that several effective treatment options exist, depending on the size, location, and symptoms of your fibroids.

For mild cases, watchful waiting with regular monitoring may be sufficient. Medications can help manage heavy bleeding and pain. Minimally invasive procedures like myomectomy (surgical removal of fibroids while preserving the uterus) are ideal for women who wish to maintain fertility. Other options include uterine artery embolization and, in severe cases, hysterectomy.
